It breaks my heart. I am a South African, I love South Africa and I hate to say that I am one of the people that have left just over a year ago. I didn't want to, but as a young professional the economic death spiral was just not something I could survive in. Especially not when overseas opportunities promised a lot more on top of safety and electricity and all those basic needs. I would gladly go back if I could.

The saddest part is that the country absolutely could provide for everyone. The ANC has failed us horribly and I am hopeful that after the next election we may see some improvements again.

I’ve lived in SA my whole life and have always believed that (provided you have the financial means) you’re able to externalise a lot of these issues (solar & battery system, borehole, private healthcare, private schooling etc.) and still live a good life (cheap property, domestic workers, holiday houses, natural beauty etc.). If you speak to most educated, employed South Africans, they will tell you the same thing.

Despite having private security (as most that can afford it do) we’ve been exposed to violent situations (held at gunpoint) on 3 separate occasions. I’ve also lost my great uncle (murdered on his farm) and nearly my aunt (shot in an attempted hijacking).

It’s taken a while, but I’ve come to realise I simply don’t have the risk appetite to remain here. I don’t know what living in a 1st world country is like, but know that I place more emphasis on safety than material “things”.

As a South African, I had the privilege to move abroad back in 2018 and I can say its so sad to leave the country I once loved behind, but there is no longer a point to ever go back due to the shear amount of Loadshedding and danger just commuting around the city. I feel like we need a new government who has their eye on the prize and can bring everyone together to work towards a common goal and ensure long lasting success in our nation. Thank you Sam for bringing attention to this issue, as I feel like its needs to be addressed internationally more if we have any hope of fixing South Africa’s shortcomings.

I was born in Joburg to British patents, we left during the uprisings (my dad worked for Anglo American who was targeted regularly)... But I still have family living in SA...

Its been truly heartbreaking to see whats happening, I feared and truly believe the ANC lost their way when Mandela passed away, his desire to rebuild South Africa through forgiveness has passed with him, those in power seem to want to gut the country for their own gain...

I really hope that next year we see the change needed, i just hope that whatever the new government looks like doesn't keep the same broken pattern and begins to reinvest in SA and begin to bring it out of this spiral
